I should be updating my blog on our Christmas festivities, but today I've been thinking about something else and thought I'd take to the blog to see what you other moms think. I may be opening a can of worms here because if I learned anything from being pregnant, it was that mother's can be quite passionate about certain opinions. I guess I should explain....
I learned very early on in my pregnancy that there were just two things you didn't bring up in a group of women unless you wanted some serious debate to heat up. These two things? Breastfeeding and natural births. It seems everyone had an opinion, and they were pretty strong. I for one, can't be a credible source on either seeing as how I had to have a c-section (and I wasn't about to test the waters on anything natural there) and it was planned early so that I wouldn't experience any contractions. So, I haven't ever felt a contraction and I don't even know what childbirth feels like. I also wasn't able to breastfeed because of Knox's health problems and some issues there. So, I can be neutral still and play the "I wouldn't know" card.
A recent conversation alerted me to another hot topic among mothers. I've been hearing a lot lately about whether Baby Einstein is a good or bad thing. It seems there are pretty passionate feelings on both sides. What do you think? Do you think Baby Einstein (or dvds geared towards babies/infants in general) are bad? Good? Or neither? I've found this so interesting because I was completely clueless that it was such a topic of debate? I guess on this one I do have a slight opinion, so I was interested to hear yours?

I think as with most things there is plenty of value as long as it's used in moderation. Do I think it's a good idea to plant your kid in front of $900 worth of Baby Einstein DVDs so you don't have to do anything......not so much. But I don't think I'll be able to function or raise a well educated child all by myself and the use of a well placed DVD can certainly help me out.
I'm interested to see what else people have to say.
ha funny my mom works at a daycare and just brought home some baby einstein dvd's for kambria to watch and she loves them! Guess i didnt know people were against them....??

Now for my opinion...
I think too much TV for anybody at any age isn't good for us. But I don't think it's going to ruin your child for life if they occasionally watch a show here or there. Some of my nieces and nephews watched them a ton growing up and they are the smartest kids I know, but they also have a very interactive mother. Let me say I think they are smart because of there mom and not the movies. But my point is, is that the movies didn't ruin them. Bailey has only watched it a few times but sometimes when I just need to make dinner it's all that works. So in my opinion, in moderation it's fine. Bailey's only watched it about 4 times in her life because she is too busy now walking around and playing. The girl can't sit long to watch anything. But I do know some people who won't let there kids near it. But honestly it's better them some of the stupid cartoons out there. And come on a kids going to want to watch TV now and then. My point, moderation.
Sorry that was long...! haha
Hey Suz,
I personally think baby Einstein is awesome. For Christmas McCrae got a whole series of Baby Einstein BOOKS! They are great. I don't have any of the dvd's but I like to record them on my dvr. McCrae doesn't know whats going on, he just likes the colors and music. Maybe when he gets older and actually gets into the TV then I will regulate how much he watches. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer its just what you think is good or bad.
Love baby einstein! I started Abby on it about 3 months and she loves it! They also have flash cards I got and I am planning on using them soon. The music on the movies is supposed to be very good for them so if she is playing and not watching I will turn it on just for that.
I didnt know anyone was against them? I think there great! Let them watch 1 a day, whats wrong with that? My kids LOVED them. I have never put Taya down long enough to have her watch one but I think im going to. I think they are good for them and if they like them then why not? Whats it gonna hurt?
The point has pretty much been made. . . nothing takes the place of a mother and/or human interaction, period. If you want a smart baby give them that. As long as your baby sees enough of YOUR face during the day, hears enough of YOUR voice, and feels enough of YOUR touch, there's nothing wrong with an hour or so breaktime for you via baby einstein :)
It's not going to hurt them and it's not going to make them brilliant but having a mom break every once in awhile will keep you sane.
Although most child development experts recommend no screen time for children under 2 years old, let's face it - they can probably afford a babysitter, nanny, or maid. It's probably better to sit the kids in front of baby Einstein than reality TV. Just don't think Knox is really going to learn French or Spanish or all his alphabet from them; it will just entertain him while you finish whatever it is you need to get done :)
It is a very good question. I am neutral, but we don't watch tv and what little Zac gets is from sports that his Dad loves to watch. THat seems to entertain him enough.
Curious....KMiles....how did you get your baby's name McCrae? My mother's maiden name is McRae. I love to hear stories, if you don't mind sharing. You can email me personally.
